Heartbreaker: Birmingham-Southern's magical postseason ends with 11-10 loss in D-3 World Series
- By TOM WITHERS - AP Sports Writer
Birmingham-Southern’s magnificent, magical ride is over. The Panthers’ inspiring postseason run, which came as the liberal arts college in Alabama was being shut down for financial failure after more than 160 years, ended with an 11-10 loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater in the Division III College World Series. It’s a heartbreaking finish for a never-say-die team that had brought so much joy to the school’s tight-knit community while captivating the hearts of American sports fans. Yankees ace Gerrit Cole to begin rehab assignment Tuesday at Double-A
- AP
New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Somerset. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner has been sidelined since spring training with a right elbow injury. There’s no specific timetable yet for his return, but Cole has said it’s possible he could be back in June. The six-time All-Star started facing hitters in simulated games last month. He threw 43 pitches last Thursday at the team’s complex in Tampa, Florida. It’s expected Cole will make multiple minor league starts before rejoining the Yankees, who lost starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt to a right lat strain last week.

Sawyers was a backup catcher on Van Horn’s first team at Nebraska in 1998 and was a volunteer assistant in 2000. He said he thanked him after the game for modeling how to be a good coach.

Popular geothermal spa in Iceland reopens to tourists after nearby volcano stabilizes
- AP
The popular Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, one of Iceland’s biggest tourist attractions in the country’s southwest, has reopened after authorities said a nearby volcano had stabilized after erupting four days earlier. Hundreds of tourists bathed in the lagoon Sunday, with the view of the erupting crater in the background. The eruption Wednesday was the fifth and most powerful since the volcanic system reawakened in December after 800 years, gushing record levels of lava as its fissure grew to 3.5 kilometers (2.1 miles) in length. The activity last week once again threatened Grindavik, a coastal town of 3,800 people, and led to the evacuation of the geothermal spa.
