How strict is Iberia with carry-on size? ›

Carry-on Luggage Size Matters

Generally, most of the European airlines limit carry-on luggage to a maximum size of 55 x 40 x 20 cm ( 21.6 x 15.7 x 7.8 in); however, a few airlines do accept bags up to 25 cm wide (9.84 inc) or do not accept more than 35cm tall (13.7 in).

Otherwise, you might get charged either a checked baggage fee, overweight bag fee, or both. Thankfully, most of the major airlines out there have made it easy by coming up with a standard carry-on size limit: 22” x 14” x 9” (56 cm x 36 cm x 23 cm), with the sum of all three measurements being 45 inches or less.

Though you might find an inch or two of a difference with various airlines, the size limit for carry-on luggage is 22" x 14" x 9", which includes the handle and the wheels. A few domestic airlines, such as Frontier and Southwest, will allow 24-inch luggage as a carry-on.

No bag should exceed 158 cm in length, including the handle, pocket and wheels. The maximum weight is 23 kg but you can check in up to 32 kg by paying a surcharge per kilo of excess weight or by paying for a 32 kg bag.

Case sizes and their designations

The exact dimensions for hand luggage vary depending on the airline, but are usually a maximum of 55x40x20 cm. This size is ideal for short trips or business trips where you only need to take the essentials.

Measure the height of the suitcase from the ground to the top of the carry handle. The length of the luggage measured as its largest points, including wheels, pockets. The width is measured at the widest part of the suitcase, include wheels and pockets.

30-50 liters: In general, luggage that has a capacity of about 50 liters or less is sufficient for a weekend trip. There are lots of carry-on duffels, packs and bags in this size range to choose from. 50-75 liters: For a trip that lasts one to two weeks, many people jump up to a bag in this range.

There are two ways that airlines measure your carry-on. H x W x D: Most airlines use this formula to calculate bag size. For example, they might require dimensions like 22 x 14 x 9 inches, which is the most common set of dimensions for carry-ons.

What happens if my carry-on is too big? ›

If your carry-on is too large – or too overstuffed – you might get stopped at the gate before boarding. Sometimes flight attendants will have to tag your bag and send it off to be stowed with checked luggage.

Outside of the U.S. the standard carry-on baggage size is smaller (this relates to flights originating outside the U.S. and with a destination outside the U.S.) Here, the rule of thumb is about 21", and not the 22" and above carry-on size.

Most domestic airlines specify 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches as the maximum size for carry-on baggage. There are some exceptions as listed below in our airline specific summary. Maximum dimensions include the wheels and the handles of your bag, so factor those into your measurements when assessing your bag.

Measure the total linear inches of your bag.

Because bags can be so many different shapes and sizes, some airlines just give a linear inch or centimeter measurement your bag needs to be under. Measure the length, height, and depth of your bag, including handles and wheels. Add those three measurements together.

Carry ons for international flights are usually a maximum of 22 inches (55cm) tall, 15 inches (40cm) wide, and 10 inches (25cm) deep.

Including handles and wheels, the maximum dimensions for a carry-on are 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 9 inches high. Personal items are limited to 17 inches long, 10 inches wide and 9 inches high.

You can take one cabin bag and one personal accessory on board. Check that your hand luggage meets the measurements, weight and number of items allowed to be able to take it with you on the plane. If not, you must check it in at the check-in counters.
