Sunday Republican, October 4, 1992 T-5 Restorations help visitors experience their ancestry By JACK BIESTERFELD The Copley News Service Old is "in" this year. All over the country, vacationers are flocking to restored pioneer villages to rediscover their roots and see how their ancestors lived. There are dozens of these oases of history, staffed by townsfolk in period 'tumes. Most have a "living tory" program, whereby the inhabitants take on the speech, professions, dress and habits of the people of the time they represent. The time periods differ from town to town, from pioneer to the Industrial Revolution, and from Colonial to turn of the century.

Here is a sampling of places to go to relive history: Conner prairie The year is eternally 1836 at the central Indiana village of Conner Prairie Pioneer Settlement north of Indianapolis. The villagers go about their daily lives as if visitors were merely other pioneers from a nearby town. Housewives cook dinner over an 1 open hearth and weave cloth, as their husbands make furniture, tend the general store or make jugs and bowls at the pottery. The crude log cabins of the village, numbering more than two dozen, are furnished with handmade furniture or heirlooms hauled across the prairie "to their new homes. There's also a pioneer activity center where visitors can try their hand at shucking corn, spinning flax or playing pioneer games.

A modern visitor center houses a theater, restaurant, handicraft gift shop and display gallery. fI Shakertown The shakers were a devout but progressive religious group who home southwest of Lexington, starting in the early 1800s. They lived in communal buildings, each strictly segregated by sex. Their house, dormitories and craft shops all reflect the simplicity stressed by those of the order. They are preserved at Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill, "nicknamed Shakertown.

Craftsmen make brooms, cabinets, wooden buckets, candles and other items which would have been made for trade by the villagers. The items can be purchased at the village gift shop. Visitors can "also live the life of the Shakers at least temporarily. Rooms in some of the historic buildings have been converted to overnight accommodations, and the old communal dining hall serves as a restaurant serving typical Shaker dishes. Roscoe Village The canal era of America is reflected in this central Ohio village, on the banks of the Ohio Erie Canal which linked Lake Erie with the Ohio River.

The canal, begun in 1825, brought prosperity to the village in the succeeding decades, and many of the storefronts and canal artifacts from that era remain. Many of the restored buildings are now quaint shops or restaurants, while several have been given over to crafts of the period, such as broom making, weaving and blacksmithing. Most of the canal has vanished, but a small segment remains, and a replica horse-drawn canal boat travels the canal during summer months. A new visitor center opened earlier this year, featuring a film and museum exhibits. his- Lincoln's New Salem Abraham Lincoln called New Salem his home while living in Illinois from 1830 onward.

A state park northwest of Springfield holds the restored log structures of New Salem. A new visitor center opened this year to help visitors learn about Lincoln's life as a young man in the pioneer town. Nearly two dozen buildings can be found here. There is Lincoln's first log store and village post office. There is a horse-operated carding mill and a blacksmith shop where the clanking of hammer on red-hot iron can still be heard.

A cooper shaves boards into barrels and buckets in his crude shop. At the Rutledge Tavern, where Lincoln often stayed and took his meals, food is prepared over the open fireplace. Greenfield Village Unlike most restored villages, Greenfield Village in Dearborn, does not cover a specific time period, but has houses and buildings from a variety of time periods. But its forte is the Industrial Revolution. Peek into a window of the Edison illuminating Co.

to see the huge steam engines and dynamos that produced electricity in one of the first plants in America. Or explore Edison's Menlo Park Laboratory with its long tables of inventions and shelves full of chemicals. Across the street is the first house in the country to be lit with electricity. Visit the Wright Brothers' shop to see how they built the first airplane, or tour Henry Ford's first automobile plant. Take a ride around the village on a steam train, or circle a lagoon on a paddlewheel steamboat.

Watch glass blowers form red hot globes into goblets, a miller. grind grain with a steam mill, potters spin bowls on a wheel, printers printing flyers and tinsmiths making kitchen utensils. Dozens of other buildings showed how people lived and worked in the 18th and 19th century. Living history farms Iowa is known for farming, and Living History. Farms west of Des Moines preserves several farmsteads representing different time periods.

There is an Indian village, a pioneer farm with log cabin and barns, and a turn of the century farm when mechanization is just taking hold. The womenfolk can probably be found in the kitchen fixing dinner over a cast iron stove, while the farmhands are outside tending the fields or milking the cows. There's an old mansion to tour, a small town main street and an agricultural exhibit center, all linked by motorized trams.
