Everything hurt; not just your body, but your heart and mind as well. Grief consumed you even when you were unconscious. You were screaming but nothing came out. Thor felt the same. He’d just lost the sense of family and hope that recently returned to his life and now a madman had the universe in his hands.
Hundreds of Asgardians floated across space, most of them lifeless, and all Thor could think about was the pain. He felt so worthless as he helplessly watched Thanos slaughter his people to get to him. He felt so much anger when he impaled Heimdall for whisking Hulk away to safety. Most of all, he felt a part of him be torn apart as he was forced to watch his brother get his neck snapped, blood pouring out of his eyes and mouth. Loki promised that the sun will shine upon them again, but he knew that that was his biggest, most hurtful lie. A lie that he still wanted to hold onto. A lie that made him want to pull Loki from Valhalla and tell him to keep his word. A lie that created a tiny voice in his head to just join his brother. He let the purple flames swallow the ship as he held onto his brother’s cold hands.
The ship exploded, and the light was all he could see, until he saw you. He panicked and made his way to you, holding you close, hoping that even when he couldn’t save you, he could still provide you a sanctuary in his arms.
The Guardiansreceived a distress signal and headed to its origin. “Rubberband Man” by The Spinners was playing as they traversed through space. Peter Quill was happily chair-dancing to the 70s tune and encouraged the snoring Drax to sing the next part. Gamora was subtlely lip-syncing to the song in her seat.
Rocket yawned and asked, “Why are we doing this again?” Gamora rolled her eyes.
“It’s a distress signal, Rocket. Someone could be dying.” She responded, clearly annoyed.
“I get that, but why are we doing it?” The uninterested raccoon pushed.
Quill joined the conversation, “’Cause we’re nice. And maybe whoever it is will give us a little cheddar cheese”—he rubbed his fingers—“for our help.”
His partner reminded him that that was not the point which Quill repeats. Quill, Drax, and Rocket suggested taking their ship instead if they don’t pay. Gamora expressed her concern to her boyfriend, to which he immediately shook his head “no” to reassure her. Mantis announced their arrival and this prompted Quill to encourage the group to put on their “mean faces” as they might encounter something dangerous. He turned his attention to Groot, who was playing a video game.
“Groot, put that thing away. Now. I don’t wanna tell you again.”
The teenager didn’t move.
“Groot..” Quill warned.
Groot swore at the man, causing the others to scold him for his reaction.
“Ever since you got a little sap, you’re a total d-hole. Keep it up, and I’m gonna SMASH THAT THING TO PIECES!” Rocket threatened. Groot rolled his eyes.
The high energy in their space suddenly vanished when the result of Thanos’ destruction appeared before them. Corpses and scraps of the vessel they used were floating everywhere. It looked like a nightmare. The Guardians’ faces expressed their collective concern and curiosity.
What happened here?
Thor and you hit hull of the group’s ship. His arms were still firmly wrapped around you. The group’s concern turned into shock and Rocket told them to get rid of you, until Thor’s eye opened. Upon realizing that he was still alive, they tried to get you away from him, believing that you were dead. He wouldn’t budge, determined to protect you no matter what. They settled for putting Thor’s body on top of a table, with you on top him, head nestled under his chin.
“How the hell is this dude still alive?” Quill pondered, gesturing to Thor.
“He is not a dude.. You’re a dude. This… this is a man. A handsome, muscular man.” Drax replied in awe of Thor’s physique.
“He’s protecting them.” Gamora remarked, admiring his dedication to protecting you instead of his body.
“Mantis, are they dead?” she asked. Mantis positioned her hand over your head and shook her head. She did the same with her other hand to Thor.
“They’re both anxious. Angry. He feels tremendous loss and guilt.”
The Guardians felt the change in the atmosphere as she spoke, it was solemn and everything felt a little more desaturated.
“What about them?” Gamora motioned to you.
“They’re grieving but they forgive him. They love him. They love each other. He wants to protect them until the very end.” Mantis smiled, tears forming in her eyes as she felt the connection you and Thor shared. “All they have left is each other.” She finished.
That immediately brought a little hope to all who were present. Quill (who was still kind of bitter after the blunt comparison Drax made) reluctantly told the girl to wake the both of you up. She gulped and nodded.
Bringing her face closer to you, she whispered, “wake.”
Thor awoke and sat upright, inadvertently and briefly releasing you in shock. He noticed you still barely conscious in his lap and held you close again before backing away from the group; the sudden movement kick-started your brain and suddenly, you aware of your surroundings. Both of you were gasping but Thor regained his composure much quicker. He turned his back on the Guardians and kissed your forehead, caressing your cheek with his right hand while his left gently held the back of your neck. You were looking at each other when you gently placed your own hands on top of his. You managed to give him a small, reassuring smile causing him to sigh and bring his own forehead to yours. Still holding your hand, he turned back to the group, who were all rendered speechless.
“Who the hell are you guys?” He questioned. Your face contorted into one of worry. What if these were some of Thanos’ henchmen?
His hand guided you to stand behind him, and this time you didn’t protest, not after what the two of you had just experienced. They each introduced themselves. You learned that their names were Peter, Gamora, Drax, Mantis, Rocket, and Groot. After realizing that they were not part of Thanos’ army, you felt significantly more relieved. Thor seemed to notice this and his grip on your hand softened ever so slightly. Mantis fetched a blanket and handed it to the man next to you. She took a couple of steps toward you and offered her hand. Thor backed away, causing you to do the same.
Electricity began to spark all around him and his eye glowed; he was using his power to protect you despite the toll it had on his already exhausted body. You put your hand on his shoulder as an attempt to calm him down. Your touch made him briefly look at you and your heart almost broke into a million piece at the sight. His eye went back to normal and he looked so broken. With just a look, he said so much to you.
“Please… Let me do this. Let me protect you. Let me do something right this time.”
“Oh, Thor.” You whispered and rest your head on his back.
“Let her use her powers,” Drax started, referring to Mantis.“she will help calm you down.”
“And how can we trust you?” Thor asked, sending chills up each Guardian’s spines with the threat hiding behind his question.
“She was the one who woke you up.” Gamora answered. You took a step forward so that you were in front of Thor.
“Okay.” You said with a sense of finality. You faced Thor and walked backwards so that you were next to Mantis.“Thor, it’s okay.”
He took a deep breath and approached you, still wary of the others.
“Do you trust me, love?” You asked him softly.
“I trust you.”
“Then let’s accept their help. It isn’t over yet.”
He nodded in agreement, his faith in you overpowering his distrust of the group.
“Mantis, do your thing.” You said, closing your eyes. Thor was about to do the same until he felt you hold his hands. He smiled and let Mantis calm the both of you down.
A wave of calm washed over the two of you and suddenly, the feelingof the universe was beating you over and over until you gave up vanished. There was just you and Thor. You opened your eyes and saw that his were still closed. He was smiling a genuine smile that made you forget how tired you were. There were so many things a person could fight for, and you vowed to keep fighting if it meant that he’d be safe. When he opened his eyes and looked at you like you were his past, present, and future, you knew he’d do the same for you.
