Can two different phones use the same phone number? Is it possible to share a mobile phone number between two people? There’s no quick way around saying “no.”
Because of security and privacy concerns, mobile service providers won’t let two people share the same phone number. Imagine if one person misplaced their phone and the other person overheard all of their calls.
The good news is that there are ways to “share” a communication channel on a cell phone, so long as the user is willing to put in a little extra work.
Primary Phone Number
Google Voice accounts, which could be the answer to this problem, are now available solely to Sprint users. Google Voice accounts allow two people to share a single phone number and receive calls at both numbers simultaneously.
You can use your primary number for a variety of reasons.
When you call someone from another carrier, they will usually ask to be transferred to your primary number. This is because it’s easier for them to transfer calls if they know where to find you.
If you are using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) or other voice services, your primary number may be required by your service provider in order to connect with you.
Your primary number should not be used as an emergency contact number. If you need to reach someone immediately, make sure that they have access to your cell phone and/or home phone numbers.
Now, getting to the main point, your primary phone number can not be used on more than one device either. Even when you make a switch to a different service provider, you can only use the number active on your new provider while the one (even if it’s the same) on the old provider’s database shall be deactivated.
However, there is a relief for Sprint users, as of 2022. This is because Sprint users can make use of Google Voice. We’ll go over this in detail later, but as of now, keep in mind that Google Voice allows users (those who are eligible) to operate two phones for one phone number.
This also means that one phone number can be used by two people at the same time and they can both receive and make calls at both numbers simultaneously without any difficulties.
Call Forwarding
Call forwarding is an automatic process in which your telephone company automatically forwards all incoming calls to another number of your choice. You may forward calls to any other location within your area code or even outside your area code if you choose.
If you are not at home when a call comes in, you will receive a message letting you know that the call has been forwarded to another number. This feature allows you to answer business calls while still being able to take personal calls.
Now, call forwarding can be a great method to be able to use one phone number on two devices. However, it is only a short-term solution since upon enabling call forwarding you can start receiving calls on the other device to which you have forwarded the calls.
How To Set Up Call Forwarding On Your Home Phone?
To set up call forwarding for your home phone:
1) Dial *72# (this is the standard access code for your local exchange carrier).
2) Enter the number where you would like to forward calls.
3) Press # to enter the new destination number.
4) Once you have entered the new number, press # again to confirm the change.
5) The system will then prompt you to enter the old number.
6) When you have finished entering the old number, press # to complete the transfer.
7) After completing these steps, the system will ask you to verify the new number by pressing 1 to accept the changes or 0 to cancel them.
8 ) Press 1 to continue.
9) The system will now display the new number as the current number.
10) Hang up the receiver.
11) Wait until the next time you hear a ring tone before picking up the receiver.
12)Answer the call as usual.
13) The caller should be connected to the new number.
14) Repeat this procedure for each additional phone number you wish to forward.
Note:If you have more than one phone line, you must repeat step 11 for each line. All calls will now be forwarded to the new number.
The ability to forward calls is a feature offered by many different phone carriers. With this feature, you can forward calls from one number to another. Call forwarding cannot typically be used to mask the original caller ID of a forwarded call.
A common feature of most phones is the ability to divert calls to another number either instantly or after a predetermined number of rings if you don’t pick up.
Mobile Applications
There are multiple third-party apps that allow you to use the same line of communication if not the same phone number on two devices. These apps have their limitations because having the same phone number on two devices is not originally supported by the network provider.
There are several third-party apps (usually paid ones) such as Skype Premium, Google Voice, and TextPlus that allow you to know about incoming calls and messages.
Why Would Someone Choose to Get Their Two Phones Ring With One Number?
You can’t have the same phone number for both devices. However, if your phone is registered in more than one area code, then you could register the same number in each of those areas. This would allow you to receive calls in any of them.
